Helio's story adds to Indy 500's legendary histor INDIANAPOLIS -- Unlike other sports, in auto racing there aren't just two teams or players going head to head. Motorsports is unique in that every race includes every team going against one another trying to win. In the case of the Indianapolis 500 there are 33 teams all Shox Turbo+ IV 4on center stage with each one playing out its own story. And in Sunday's 93rd running of "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" there were more storylines than any television soap opera writer could imagine. Topping the list was the incredible storybook ending for race winner Helio Castroneves, who a little more than a month ago was staring at a life-changing prison sentence for tax evasion charges. • Castroneves wins Indy | Results But after winning the battle of his legal issues Castroneves came roaring back to his day job and scored one of the most emotional 500 wins in Indianapolis history. "This is incredible," Castroneves said weeping in Victory Lane. "I think the tears speak for everything." The popular Brazilian driver waved to the thunderous cheersnike jordan 21 of the estimated crowd of more than 300,000 -– easily the largest turnout for the 500 in nearly a decade -– who roared its approval. "You guys don't understand," Castroneves said addressing the grandstands. "You guys kept me strong. You guys are the best. I'm honored to have fans like you. Thank you so much." Standing next to his winning driver and car watching the celebration play out was legendary team owner Roger Penske, who now holds 15 career Indianapolis 500, wins, more than any other car owner. "I couldn't be prouder of Helio and everything he went through to get us back here to Victory Lane at Indianapolis," Penske said. "This is a true testament to Helio as not just a race car driver but a person and I am extremely excited about this great day." Although Castroneves was the only race winner Sunday, there were reasons for other drivers to celebrate. Runner-up finisher Dan Wheldon, a former Indy 500 winner who wasjordan shoes 2.5 the odd man out when owner Chip Ganassi opted to open a seat on his two-car team for the returning Dario Franchitti, capped a stellar effort for the upstart Panther Racing team. "I knew I didn't have enough for Helio but this almost feels like a win for this team," Wheldon said. "We had such a good month here and this team never gave up even in some of the downturns we had to deal with. To finish it up with this run is sweet to say the least." Danica Patrick, who dodged questions about her possible move to NASCAR all month long, continued her impressive Indianapolis record with a third-place finish. But while a top five for any driver in arguably the world's biggest race is an accomplishment, Patrick can't help but still feel disappointed she hasn't found a way to Victory Lane in the 500. "We had a good car that's for sure," Patrick said. "What are you going to do?" There were some frayed emotions Sunday as well with a war of words breaking out between Marco Andretti and Mario Moraes after they made contact with first each other and then the wall on the opening lap. "The kid doesn't get it, and he never will," said Andretti, who seems to have inherited his family's long and troubled history at Indianapolis. "He's just clueless out there." Moraes returned the serve with a barb of his own. "I know the 26 hit me, OK? I was in front," he said walking toward Andretti's pit but never reaching his destination. "I was holding my line, and he just hit me. I don't know from where." The Andrettis weren't the only storied Indy Car family experiencingAir Jordan shoes 6 ring trouble on Sunday. Second generation Graham Rahal, whose father Bobby won the 1986 Indy 500, ended his day with a crash for the second year in a row. "Milka [Duno] got in front of me, and she was absolutely clueless," said Rahal of one of the race's three female drivers. "She would go low like she was going to let everybody by, but then she'd go fast enough where you can't get by her. She would come out on track and run you real tight. I tried to go half a car width up in [Turn] 4 and it just went straight. Same thing I had last year. I'm really upset and disappointed." Then there was the drama surrounding Alex Lloyd and his wife Samantha, the expectant mother who began to feel contractions shortly before the drop of the green flag. As her husband battled through the grueling 500 miles, Mrs. Lloyd gamely stayed in his pit box urging him on until the checkered flag flew and a 13th-place finish was in hand. "She can come now, that's all right," she said of the newest member of theCamel cigarettes family. "We made it through." It's this wide array of emotions, stories, happy and sad endings that make the Indianapolis 500 perhaps the most dramatic sporting event in the world. The ebbs and flows of the 500 miles is unmatched by any professional or amateur sport and I for one can't wait to see how the 2010 edition plays out.
